The stage was set, 32 days had gone by, and now we were about to have our winner finally. 4 teams had been eliminated, and only 2 were left. On March 22nd 2020, both those teams were expected to take the field one final time.
As always, before the start of PSL every match, there were some rituals that
needed to perform. Everyone had their own rituals. If you were a fan watching
the game on tv, you made sure you grabbed the remote and had the living room to
yourself. If you were a youngster living in a hostel, you had your laptop set
up beforehand, while having YouTube opened with the B sports streams. If you
were one of the few lucky ticket holders, then you would have made sure to reach
the ground on time to grab all the free merchandise that was to be thrown out.
Even the umpire that their own ritual, where they would come out to the ground while rubbing hand sanitizers on their palms.
Two teams would have walked out one last time. While the fans would have been excited to see the final battle, yet there would have been a feeling of dejection in the air; the festival was taking place one last time.
The PSL is not just a cricket tournament for Pakistan. It is much more than cricket. The PSL is a 30-day festival where one not only enjoys watching the games but also discussing the events of the match the next day over the watercolor; or enjoy sharing and tagging each other on funny memes, or being interested in watching the regional News channel being involved in team banter with rival channels. Even the ticket holder had his/her little moments or dreams of where they would catch the ball and be one of the winners of Pepsi catch a crore.
The league had returned to its home and everything was going so well, but coronavirus pandemic has canceled it all.
While we still had the league, we still enjoyed the fun, we couldn’t get the closure that was needed. The winner is still yet to be decided.
